Whilst it is a little ahead of the build plan, I have started on making the fuel tank and top. A reader of the website, Bob has asked if I would make another tank and top whilst making my own. So a start has been made. The first attempt ended badly. The stock material actually started to deform due to heat! I put this down to two possible reasons. 1. The size of the tool steel being too large, storing the heat generated when cutting and 2. Speed of cutting. |
Session 1. I therefore ground smaller (1/8th square) tool steel and made very light cuts, producing the tank shown in the photo's. Just one thing though.......I forgot to turn it to the correct 1" diameter first! However it was finished, to make sure that all possible snags were ironed out. So a start was then made on the third tank. After facing off the blank it was turned down to size. Following centre drilling the cavity was started using a newly ground tool. Careful cutting was going well and I was just about to finish turning the centre pillar to size. It was measured and about 10thou oversize so I decided to just take a couple of thou off and ...........yes you guessed it......................the %$£%&* snapped off! So that was it I called it a day. On the positive side I still have stock.......I have the tools ground...........I know the pitfalls and the sequence........and the tears have dried up! time taken 3 hours 20 minutes. |
Session 2. Todays efforts are shown in in the gallery below. Suffice to say that it went better than yesterday! Indeed other than the time I took (because I didn't want to muck up any more!) it all went fairly well. There is some confusing about the tank top I am making for Bob (a website viewer) as I do not know what sort of carburation set up he has. What this has shown is that there is some differences between the Mk1 and the Mk2, and indeed the Mk2 has some variations when looking various photo's. It doesn't matter on my build however. time taken 3 hours. Total time for tanks 6 hours 20 minutes. |
